Rubavu City Tour: A Journey to Explore the Beauty of Rubavu District
As part of their practical learning experience, Level 3 students from the Tourism department at Rubavu Technical College - TSS recently embarked on an educational tour around the vibrant city of Rubavu. The trip, led by their instructor Mr. Dusengimana Jean Damour, allowed students to witness firsthand the cultural and natural beauty that makes Rubavu one of Rwanda's most sought-after destinations.
The tour covered a variety of significant landmarks in the city. Students began their journey at Umuganda Stadium, a landmark that symbolizes both the sports culture and community spirit of Rubavu. From there, they visited the Kivu Lake, where the students had the opportunity to appreciate the breathtaking views of one of Africa’s largest freshwater lakes. The tour continued with a visit to the two border points: Grande Barrière and La Corniche & Petite Barrière, where students learned about the international trade and tourism dynamics at these strategic border crossings between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The students were also able to visit the Hot Springs (Amashyuza), a natural feature of Rubavu that has become famous for its therapeutic benefits. The experience provided an opportunity for students to understand the potential of natural resources in promoting wellness tourism. Additionally, the group visited Bralirwa, a major brewery in the region, where students gained insight into the industrial side of Rubavu, particularly its role in Rwanda’s economic growth. The final stop was Rubavu Bus Park, a key transport hub for the city, where the students observed the importance of transportation infrastructure in fostering both local and international tourism.

Throughout the tour, students expressed their excitement and appreciation for the opportunity to explore their surroundings. Maniriho Basmah, a student in the Tourism department, noted, "This trip was truly interesting and informative. I never imagined that our own city holds so many opportunities that can help us after we complete our studies." Irasubiza Obed added, “I’m now able to see how we can use the resources around us to create jobs and businesses in the tourism sector. I feel inspired to pursue my career further in this field.”
The students were also quick to thank Rubavu Technical College for providing such enriching opportunities that allow them to put their theoretical knowledge into practice. They acknowledged the school’s role in equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in the tourism industry. As one of the students mentioned, "We are grateful to the school management for continually investing in our future by organizing such practical trips that help us see what we are learning in action."
The Rubavu City Tour not only enriched the students' educational experience but also provided them with a deeper appreciation of the potential of Rubavu as a tourist destination. For many, it was a reminder of the value of local tourism and the impact it can have on the development of the region. This tour is just one of many ways Rubavu Technical College ensures its students are well-prepared for their future careers.
