Rubavu Technical College Urges Students to Stand Firm Against Genocide Ideology
As Rwanda commemorates the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rubavu Technical College - TSS has joined the rest of the country in honoring the memory of over one million lives lost during one of the darkest chapters in human history. In a moving address to students and staff, the school’s leadership emphasized the importance of preserving national unity and preventing any return to divisionism and hatred. The call to action was clear: the youth must reject all forms of genocide ideology and be ambassadors of peace and reconciliation.
Mr. Nsengimana Telesphore, the School Manager of Rubavu Technical College, delivered a powerful message during a special commemoration gathering held at the school. He reminded students that Rwanda’s journey since 1994 has been one of resilience, healing, and transformation. “Our school stands for unity and reconciliation,” he said. “We cannot and will not tolerate any traces of genocide ideology or denial within our walls. Our role is to shape a generation that will protect the gains our country has made and ensure such tragedy never happens again.”
He further explained that genocide ideology does not always appear in obvious ways. It can be subtle, hidden in hate speech, stereotypes, or attempts to rewrite history. That is why education institutions like Rubavu Technical College play a critical role—not only in training students technically but also in cultivating values of empathy, truth, and justice. Students were encouraged to be vigilant, to speak up against harmful narratives, and to seek truth through verified historical facts and testimonies from survivors.
The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi was not an accident, but a carefully planned and executed campaign rooted in long-standing discrimination and dehumanization. It serves as a painful reminder of what can happen when division is allowed to grow unchecked. Today, Rwanda has become a symbol of hope, rebuilding itself through justice, reconciliation, and youth empowerment. Mr. Nsengimana emphasized that the country cannot afford to go backwards, and that the future rests in the hands of young people who understand their past and are committed to building a shared future.
